Not All "Wine" Is Created Equal

One of the biggest sources of confusion is the word "wine" itself. In the original languages of the Bible, one word could mean two very different things:

Fresh Juice: This is often called "New Wine." It’s the fresh, unfermented juice straight from the grape. The Bible calls this a blessing and a gift from God.

Fermented Liquor: This is juice that has gone through the process of decay (fermentation) to become alcoholic. This is where the warnings begin.

Think of it like the word "cider" today—it could be a fresh, sweet drink for the whole family, or it could be "hard" cider with alcohol. The Bible uses "wine" in both ways, but it only warns us against the kind that intoxicates.

Alcohol is a "Mocker"

The Book of Proverbs is filled with wisdom, and it doesn't pull any punches regarding alcohol.

"Wine is a mocker, strong drink is a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise." — Proverbs 20:1

The Bible describes alcohol as a "snake" that bites when you least expect it. It promises a good time but delivers "woe, sorrow, and contentions" (Proverbs 23:29). By staying sober, you keep your mind clear and avoid the trap of saying or doing things you’ll later regret.

We Are Called to a Higher Standard

In the Old Testament, the priests were strictly forbidden from touching alcohol while serving God. They had to be alert to distinguish between what was holy and what was not.

Today, the Bible says that all believers are part of a "royal priesthood." If the leaders of old stayed sober to serve God, shouldn't we do the same? We want our minds to be fully available to hear God’s voice without any chemical interference.

Protecting Others (The "Stumbling Block")

Even if someone thinks they can "handle" a drink, we have to think about the people around us.

Alcoholism is a thief: It destroys families and lives.

Leading by example: If our "liberty" to drink causes someone else to struggle or fall back into addiction, the Bible says we are not acting in love.

Choosing not to drink is a way to protect your brothers and sisters and ensure your testimony stays "blameless."

What About Jesus at the Wedding?

People often point to Jesus turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana. However, many scholars believe that Jesus—the Creator of life—would have created pure, fresh, life-giving grape juice, not a beverage that had undergone fermentation (which is a form of decay). Jesus came to give life, and he wouldn't provide a substance that the Bible elsewhere warns will "bite like a viper."

The Bottom Line

Choosing to live alcohol-free isn't about following a boring rule; it's about protection and

purpose. It keeps your mind sharp, your body healthy (as a temple of the Holy Spirit), and your influence positive.

"Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." — 1 Peter 5:8

When we stay sober, we stay ready!
